  • Re: Notes on Retention of players

This is such a tough problem.  When we stop allowing premades to get matches, nobody (including non-premades) gets matches and it becomes the top complaint.  When we shift the matchmaker to allow these groups to be matched together, we the get opposite response: matches are not fair.  Then we tried filling matches with bots if no fair matches exist, and people hated that, too.  At the end of the day, there isn't a good solution.

The fact of the matter is, we cannot create fair matches out of thin air.  We can forbid unfair matches and make you wait longer (probably forever).  However, when we tried this in the past, we noticed that people were leaving our game droves after waiting 5 minutes in the matchmaking queue and getting bored.  Neither one of these solutions are good, but there isn't really a good compromise that exists.

Here's an interesting thread from a while back from Awesomenauts: http://joostdevblog.blogspot.com/2014/11/why-good-matchmaking-requires-enormous.html
